Who we cover

Whatever you run, we can help cover it.

One rigid on local work through to a linehaul fleet running interstate, whether you are an owner-driver, a subcontractor or a company.

What can be included

One policy, built section by section.

A truck policy is a set of sections, and the ones you need depend on what you run and the freight you move. An owner-driver leads with the unit, the load and their own income; an operator with drivers adds fleet and employer cover. We build the programme around the operation, then compare it across a panel of insurers.

Comprehensive Motor

The prime mover, rigid or combination at agreed value, including the body and permanently fitted equipment. On a financed unit this is what decides whether a total loss clears the loan.

Carriers Liability

What you are legally liable for when a customer's freight is lost or damaged in your care. This is the cover freight contracts actually name, usually with a limit stated per consignment.

Get a quote

Public Liability

Third parties injured or property damaged in the course of the work, from a dock incident to a load leaving the deck, plus the legal costs of defending it.

Get a quote

Trailer in Control

Trailers you tow but do not own. Your motor policy covers your unit; a customer's or depot's trailer coupled to it is a separate exposure, and the most common gap we find on linehaul policies.

Downtime Cover

An income benefit while the truck is off the road after an insured event. Over Australian distances a breakdown far from base is measured in weeks, and a contract rarely waits.

Get a quote

Goods in Transit

The freight itself, insured regardless of fault. Where carriers liability answers what you owe, this answers what the load was worth. Some contracts require it by name.

Get a quote

Fleet & Driver Cover

Multiple units on one renewal, priced on your own claims record rather than the class average, with the driver management and Chain of Responsibility obligations that come with employing people.

Get a quote

Personal Accident & Income

A weekly benefit while injury or illness keeps you off the road. As a sole trader you generally cannot hold workers compensation on yourself, which is exactly why this exists.

What insurance does a transport operator need in Australia?
Comprehensive motor on each unit, public liability, and carriers liability for the freight you move. Most operators add trailer in control if they tow equipment they do not own, and downtime cover because a truck stopped a long way from base is measured in weeks rather than days.
What is carriers insurance, and is it the same as goods in transit?
They are related but not the same. Carriers liability covers what you are legally liable for when a customer's freight is lost or damaged in your care. Goods in transit insures the freight itself regardless of fault. Your contract usually dictates which is acceptable, and they are not interchangeable.
How much carriers liability insurance should I carry?
Enough for your largest single consignment, not your average, because the limit applies per event. Many freight contracts also specify a minimum. If you occasionally carry loads well outside your normal range, that peak is the number to insure to.
Does my insurance cover a trailer I tow but do not own?
Not as standard. Your motor policy covers your unit; a trailer belonging to a customer or a depot while it is coupled to you is a separate exposure, handled by trailer in control. It is the most common gap we find on linehaul and subcontract operations.
Does Chain of Responsibility affect my truck insurance?
It affects your exposure, which affects your insurance. Liability for mass, load restraint and fatigue extends to operators and schedulers, not just drivers, so a liability claim can turn on your systems. Insurers increasingly ask about them at underwriting, and good records improve terms.
What happens to my insurance when I put on a second driver?
Two things change. The vehicle policy needs a driver basis that permits them, and employing someone brings workers compensation obligations. It is the single largest step in scaling a transport business and the one most often taken without telling anyone who arranges the cover.
Should I insure my truck for agreed or market value?
Agreed value in most cases, particularly on a financed unit. It fixes the sum at inception rather than leaving it to an assessment on the day of the claim, which is where market value can leave a shortfall against the loan that becomes yours rather than the insurer's.
What is radius of operation, and how is it measured?
Radius is how far from your garaging address the truck operates, and it is one of the strongest rating factors on a truck policy. The part that catches operators out is how it is measured: as a straight line from the garaging address, as the crow flies, not by road kilometres. A 200km radius is a 200km circle on a map, so a run that takes 300km of road can still sit inside it, while a town 210km away in a straight line falls outside it no matter how the road bends.
Who handles my claim if something goes wrong?
We do. Claims are managed in-house by our own team here in Australia, not handed to an offshore call centre or left to you to chase. We lodge it, brief the assessor, keep it moving and put the case if an assessment comes back short. On a truck that matters more than on a car, because the real cost of a claim is rarely the repair — it is the days the unit is not earning. You get people you can call directly rather than a queue and a reference number.
How much does truck insurance cost in Australia?
There is no single figure. It depends on the units and their values, what you cart, your radius and annual kilometres, where vehicles are garaged, your claims history and your drivers. We compare across a panel rather than quoting one insurer, which matters more at this scale.
Are you an insurer?
No. Truckie Cover is a trading name of Stonewell Insurance Pty Ltd, a licensed insurance broker. We act for you, not for an insurer: we work out what the operation needs, approach the market on your behalf, and advocate for you at claim time.
