Food Truck Insurance

A food truck is a commercial kitchen that drives, and it has to be insured as both. The motor side is straightforward; the part that gets missed is that you are cooking with gas in a confined space, at events, surrounded by the public.

What food trucks insurance covers

The Fit-Out Is the Business

Grills, fryers, refrigeration, extraction and the servery are worth far more than the vehicle in many cases, and they are what actually earns. They must be scheduled, because a motor settlement on the vehicle alone does not put you back in business.

Gas, Fryers and Fire

LPG in a confined space next to hot oil is the defining hazard, and it is why food trucks are underwritten differently from other light commercials. Gas certificates, extinguishers and suppression systems affect both whether you are offered terms and at what price.

Public Liability at Events

Markets, festivals and private events almost always require public liability at a stated limit before you can trade, often twenty million. In practice the certificate is a condition of getting the pitch, so it decides whether you can work at all.

Food Safety and Product Liability

If someone becomes ill, that is products liability rather than public liability, and the two are usually bundled but not always. Given what you sell, confirm products cover is included rather than assuming the liability section covers everything.

Spoilage and Breakdown

A refrigeration failure overnight can write off your entire stock and cancel a weekend's trading. Machinery breakdown with a spoilage extension is the section that responds, and it is elected rather than automatic.

Cover, limits and examples shown are general in nature and subject to eligibility, underwriting and the terms of the issued policy.

What insurance does a food truck need in Australia?
Commercial motor with the kitchen fit-out scheduled, public and products liability, and machinery breakdown with spoilage for the refrigeration. Most event organisers require evidence of public liability before you can trade, so it is effectively mandatory.
How much public liability do food trucks need?
Twenty million is the common requirement at Australian markets and events, with ten million still accepted in some settings. The right answer is whatever your event organisers specify, since without the certificate you do not get the pitch.
Is the cooking equipment covered by the vehicle policy?
Only if it is declared and scheduled. Standard motor cover contemplates a vehicle, not a fitted commercial kitchen. Since the fit-out is usually the larger share of the value, this is the most important thing to get right.
Does insurance cover stock lost when the fridge fails?
That is machinery breakdown with a spoilage extension, elected separately. A refrigeration failure can cost a full stock holding plus a weekend's trading, so it is usually worth the small additional premium.
