Small Truck Insurance

This page is for the first truck rather than the smallest one. Buying it is usually the point at which a small business stops being insured like a tradesperson and starts being insured like a transport operator, and that shift catches people out.

What small trucks insurance covers

Your Existing Business Policy Will Not Stretch

A tradesperson's package or a small business pack rarely contemplates a truck carrying goods for reward. Bolting a truck onto an existing policy usually produces a gap rather than a saving, and the gap shows up at claim time.

No Claims History as a Transport Risk

A clean car history helps less than owners expect, because insurers want claims experience in the class. First-time truck operators often pay a first-year loading, which comes off at renewal with a clean year behind them.

One Truck Means No Spare

With a single vehicle, any repair stops the business entirely. Downtime or hire vehicle cover matters more for a one-truck operator than for a fleet, which is the opposite of what most people assume when they are trying to keep the first premium down.

Who Else Will Drive It

Small operators lend the truck to staff, family and mates. Unlisted or unlicensed drivers are a common reason a first claim is declined, so it is worth setting the driver basis deliberately rather than discovering the restriction afterwards.

Getting the Use Description Right First Time

The description you give at inception defines the policy for the year. Carrying your own materials, carting for customers and subcontracting to a larger operator are three different uses, and businesses drift between them without telling anyone.

Cover, limits and examples shown are general in nature and subject to eligibility, underwriting and the terms of the issued policy.

FAQ

Small trucks insurance questions.

Speak with our team on 1300 080 323.

What insurance do I need for my first truck?
Commercial motor rated for how you will actually use it, public liability, and carriers cover if you carry goods belonging to customers. If it is your only vehicle, price downtime cover too, because a repair stops your income completely.
Can I add a truck to my existing business insurance?
Usually not sensibly. Trade and small business packages rarely contemplate carrying goods for reward, so adding a truck tends to create a gap rather than a saving. A properly rated commercial motor policy is the cleaner answer.
Why is my first truck premium higher than my car?
Because insurers rate on experience in the class, and a clean car record counts for less than a year of clean truck operation. Most operators see it improve at first renewal, which is worth knowing before assuming the first quote is permanent.
Can employees drive the truck?
Only if the policy's driver basis allows it. Unlisted or incorrectly licensed drivers are among the most common reasons a first claim is declined. Decide the basis deliberately at inception rather than assuming anyone with a licence is covered.
